L5R: Kata
Based on the 4th edition rules
Kata are martial techniques taught by various schools.
A bushi can learn a Kata if they are of the appropriate School, and have a sufficiently high rank in the required Ring.
Other Schools: Other schools of the same clan can purchase Kata, treating their Rings as one rank lower for the purpose of meeting the Mastery Level.
Executing a Kata is a Simple Action. Dropping out of a Kata is a Free Action. A character may only benefit from one Kata at a time.

- Effect: When in Defense Stance, your Armor TN is increased by your Air.
- Ring/Mastery: Earth 3
- Schools: Any
- Effect: When in Full Defense Stance, you gain Reduction equal to your Earth, cumulative with other sources.
- Ring/Mastery: Fire 3
- Schools: Any
- Effect: When in Full Attack Stance, you can add your Fire to the total of one attack roll per round.

- Effect: When in Center Stance, your Armor TN is increased by your Void.

- Effect: When in Attack Stance, you can move +5' as a Free Action.

- Effect: While wearing armor and in the Attack Stance, your armor grants +2 Reduction.
- Ring/Mastery: Air 3
- Schools: Any Crane Bushi
- Effect: When fighting with a sword or spear, you add your Honor Rank -3 (minimum 1) to your Armor TN.
- Ring/Mastery: Fire 3
- Schools: Any Dragon Bushi
- Effect: While wielding a katana in your main hand and a wakizashi in your off hand, you gain +3 to Armor TN.
- Ring/Mastery: Water 3
- Schools: Any Lion Bushi
- Effect: Once per Round in the Reactions Stage, you can add +3 to the Initiative Score of one ally in the skirmish. This stacks, but the benefits disappear when the Kata ends.

- Schools: Any Mantis or Wasp Bushi
- Effect: The attack penalty for ranged attacks fired against opponents in melee range is reduced by 3.
- Ring/Mastery: Void 3
- Schools: Any Phoenix Bushi
- Effect: Once per Turn when you declare a Guard Action, you can increase the Armor TN of the person you are guarding by another +3.
- Ring/Mastery: Fire 3
- Schools: Any Scorpion Bushi
- Effect: Once per Turn after successfully using the Feint Maneuver, you add +3 to your damage total.
- Ring/Mastery: Water 3
- Schools: Any Unicorn Bushi
- Effect: While mounted, your steed gets +3 to Armor TN and +3 Reduction.

- Schools: Mirumoto Bushi, Shiba Bushi
- Effect: You can use Void instead of REF for your Initiative Roll.
- Ring/Mastery: Air 3
- Schools: Kakita Bushi, Bayushi Bushi
- Effect: Your Initiative Score increases by 2 in the Reactions Stage of each Combat Round. This stacks, but is lost if the Kata is no longer in effect.

- Schools: Daidoji Iron Warrior, Shiba Bushi
- Effect: When wielding a polearm or spear, you get +3 to your Initiative Score.
- Ring/Mastery: Fire 4
- Schools: Akodo Bushi, Kakita Bushi
- Effect: Choose one opponent. Once per Turn you can use AGI instead of STR for damage rolls against that opponent.
- Ring/Mastery: Air 4
- Schools: Bayushi Bushi, Mantis Bushi
- Effect: Your Disarm attacks deal normal damage (rather than 2k1). You cannot increase the damage with Raises (including by using the Feint Maneuver).

- Schools: Hida Bushi, Ichiro Bushi, Moto Bushi
- Effect: Reduce your TN penalties from Wound Ranks by your Earth.
- Ring/Mastery: Air 4
- Schools: Daidoji Iron Warrior, Shiba Bushi
- Effect: While using a spear or polearm, you can use your Air instead of AGI for attack rolls.
- Ring/Mastery: Earth 3
- Schools: Daidoji Iron Warrior, Hida Bushi
- Effect: You can use your Earth in place of Air for the Defense Stance.
- Ring/Mastery: Water 3
- Schools: Bayushi Bushi, Hiruma Bushi, Mirumoto Bushi, Shiba Bushi
- Effect: At the start of a round, you may reduce your Armor TN by up to Water ×5 (but not to below 5) and increase your maximum movement for the round by the same amount.
- Ring/Mastery: Earth 4
- Schools: Hida Bushi, Hida Pragmatist, Shiba Bushi, Daidoji Iron Warrior
- Effect: While in the Defense or Full Defense Stance, your Armor TN is increased by an additional amount equal to your Earth.
- Ring/Mastery: Air 4
- Schools: Any Bushi
- Effect: You may add your Air to the total of any attack roll made while attempting the Increased Damage Maneuver.
- Ring/Mastery: Earth 3
- Schools: Hida Bushi, Hiruma Bushi, Matsu Berserker, Ichiro Bushi
- Effect: Reduce your Armor TN by an amount up to your Earth; all damage rolls have their total increased by the same amount.
- Ring/Mastery: Water 4
- Schools: Daigotsu Bushi, Hida Bushi, Moto Bushi
- Effect: Once per round when attacking an opponent you may ignore Reduction equal to your Water.
- Ring/Mastery: Fire 4
- Schools: Matsu Berserker, Usagi Bushi
- Effect: You can add your Fire to your Armor TN in the Full Attack Stance.

- Schools: Akodo Bushi, Mantis Bushi, Shosuro Infiltrator
- Effect: When attacking with a Small melee weapon, you reduce your opponent's Reduction by 1.
- Ring/Mastery: Air 4

- Effect: You may add your Air to the total of any attack roll made while attempting the Called Shot or Knockdown Maneuvers.
- Ring/Mastery: Fire 5
- Schools: Mantis Bushi, Mirumoto Bushi
- Effect: While wielding a weapon in each hand, once per Turn, you can make the Extra Attack Maneuver for 3 Raises instead of 5. This attack is made with your off-hand weapon. You may not increase damage on either attack with Raises.

- Effect: While wielding a heavy weapon, once per Turn, you can use STR in place of AGI for an attack roll.

- Effect: Once per Turn, while rolling damage, you can roll your Honor Rank instead of STR + DR, keeping the usual number for the DR.
- Ring/Mastery: Earth 3
- Schools: Hida Bushi, Hiruma Scout, Shiba Bushi, Daidoji Iron Warrior
- Effect: Reduce your Initiative by an amount up to your Earth (but not below 0); your armor TN is increased by the same amount.
- Ring/Mastery: Earth 3
- Schools: Hida Bushi, Hiruma Bushi, Ichiro Bushi, Moto Bushi, Moto Vindicator
- Effect: When using the Heavy Weapons Skill, your STR is considered 1 Rank higher for the purposes of dealing damage.
- Ring/Mastery: Air 4
- Schools: Bayushi Bushi, Hiruma Bushi, Mantis Bushi, Wasp Archer
- Effect: Once per turn, you can add your Stealth Skill Rank to your Armor TN for a single attack.
- Ring/Mastery: Water 3
- Schools: Akodo Bushi, Kakita Bushi, Shinjo Bushi
- Effect: When you are wielding a weapon in which you have at least 3 Skill Ranks, you get +1k0 damage.
- Ring/Mastery: Earth 5
- Schools: Hida Bushi, Hiruma Bushi, Hiruma Scout, Ichiro Bushi
- Effect: Your Water is considered 2 Ranks lower (minimum 1) for movement. All attack rolls with the Heavy Weapons Skill get 1 Free Raise only useable for the Knockdown Maneuver.
