Ancestors are special Spiritual Advantages, only permitted at the GM's discretion. The character has the active guidance and advice of a greater ancestor now dwelling in Yomi, the Realm of Blessed Ancestors.
Restrictions:
Same Devotion only, sometimes same Sect only.
As a Complex Action, you can make a Meditation/Void Roll to see through any illusion or deception (TN set by GM.)
Demands: You must meditate at least 4 hours each day, and be absolutely ascetic (shunning even the most minor pleasures and indulgences). If you voluntarily violate this lifestyle, Basso will abandon you.
You get +1k1 to all INT-based Rolls.
Demands: If you ever voluntarily pass a chance to learn about a new teaching, sect, or belief within the Brotherhood, Mizumoto will abandon you.
You are considered one Insight Rank higher for the purposes of learning and using kiho.
Demands: If you ever pass a chane to share enlightenment or the Tao with others, Sakura will abandon you.
If your Meditation Skill Rank is equal to or higher than your Jiujutsu Skill Rank, you get a Free Raise on unarmed attacks.
Demands: If you ever kill another human being with unarmed attacks, Kaze will abandon you.
You gain +1k0 to all damage rolls and ignore 4 points of Reduction. Any Crab fighting alongside you in a skirmish is inspired and gains +1 Void Point (lost if not used by the end of the skirmish).
Demands: Any Round that at least one fellow Crab is wounded within your sight, you must suffer 1 Wound in sympathy, ignoring Reduction and other damage negation. If you choose not to, or ever voluntarily retreat from a fight with a Shadowlands creature, Hida will abandon you.
You get +1k0 to Stealth, Kenjutsu, and Kyujutsu rolls.
Demands: If you ever willingly betray the Crab Clan, or your Honor rises above 5.0, Hiruma will abandon you.
When you spend a Void Point on a Craft or Engineering Skill Roll, you get +3k1 (instead of +1k1). Once per year, you can call on Kaiu's inspiration to make a Craft Skill Roll (TN 50) to create a minor awakened nemuranai. Its powers are chosen by the GM, but should start weak (e.g. +1k0 to skills or damage rolls) but will grow stronger over time.
Demands: If you deliberately produce Craft/Engineering work that is less than your best, Kaiu will abandon you.
Once per session, you may spend a Void Point to gain your Earth Ring as unkept dice to a Spellcasting Roll. When rolling to resist the Shadowlands taint, you may roll twice and keep the better result.
Demands: If you ever gain a single point of Shadowlands Taint, Kuni will abandon you.
You get +1k0 on Meditation Skill Rolls and +1k1 on Spell Casting Rolls when casting non-damaging spells with the Craft or Defense keywords.
Demands: If you ever willingly and deliberately harm a living creature, even a Tainted one, Asahina will abandon you.
You get +1k0 to any Spellcasting Rolls for spells that heal Wounds or treat poison or sickness, and a Free Raise on any Medicine Skill Roll made to treat injury, disease, or poison.
Demands: If you ignore or refuse to treat any sick or injured child, or knowingly allow a child to be harmed, Koresada will abandon you.
You gain +1k0 to all Courtier, Etiquette, Perform, and Sincerity rolls.
Demands: If you ever commit a Major Breach of Etiquette, or ever lose more than 3 points of Honor or Glory from a single breach of etiquette, Doji will abandon you.
Doji Hayaku is the founder of the Daidoji family. You get +1k1 to Lore: Shadowlands Skill Rolls and a Free Raise on all attacks with Spears.
Demands: You must keep your hair dyed white in memory of Doji Hayaku. If you ever abandon, betray, or endanger a member of the Doji family (or your charge, if you are a yojimbo), Hayaku will abandon you.
You may spend a Void Point to re-roll any Iaijutsu or Artisan Skill Roll with a +1k1 to the second roll, and keep the better result. All members of the Matsu family are Sworn Enemies to you.
Demands: If you ever lose a duel or an artistic competition, or your Honor drops below 4.0, Kakita will abandon you.
You get +1k0 to Spell Casting Rolls with non-Void spells, and +1k1 to all Spellcraft Skill Rolls. If you spend 10 points, you are one of Agasha's most favored descendants, and learn the secret spell Transmute.
Demands: If you ever serve in war, except against the Shadowlands, Agasha will abandon you.
You may use PER for any Skill or Trait Roll that would normally use AWA. If you spend a Void Point on any Skill or Trait Roll to tell whether someone is lying to you, you gain +2k2 instead of +1k1.
Demands: If you ever accept a solution to a problem, crime, or puzzle that you know or sincerely believe to be false, Kitsuki will abandon you.
You gain +1k1 to all AGI-based Skill Rolls, or +3k1 if using a Mirumoto Bushi School Skill.
Demands: If you ever issue a challenge and lose the subsequent duel, or ever refuse a duel with someone trained in the Kakita Bushi School, Mirumoto will abandon you.
Only a member of the Dragon tattooed orders may take Togashi Yamatsu as an Ancestor.
You gain two ranks of Magic Resistance against maho, and +2k2 to any WIL Roll to resist being possessed or magically controlled.
Demands: If you ever gaint Taint 1.0 or higher, or willingly use maho or a Shadowlands power, Yamatsu will abandon you.
You can ignore the effects of lack of rest or sleep for a number of days equal to your Honor Rank.
Demands: If you ever turn away from helping those suffering from war or disaster, Miya will abandon you.
You get +1k1 when using the Courtier Skill with the Manipulation or Rhetoric Emphases.
Demands: If you ever willingly betray the Imperial house, or are tricked or outmaneuvered by a political rival with equal or lower Status Rank, Otomo will abandon you.
Once per session, you can gain the benefits of a Void Point without having to spend one.
Demands: If you ever embrace a heretical religious viewpoint, or place your own needs, goals, or desires ahead of the Imperial house, Seppun will abandon you.
You gain +1k0 to all Bugei Skill Rolls (except Iaijutsu) and +1k1 to any rolls on the Mass Battle Table. Any time you enter a skirmish with at least one other Lion bushi fighting alongside you, you gain +1 Void Point (lost if not used by the end of the skirmish).
Demands: If your Honor ever drops below 5.0, or you voluntarily leave a battle or skirmish where other Lion are still fighting, Akodo will abandon you.
You get +1k0 to all rolls using INT and +2k0 to damage when fighting unarmed.
Demands: If you ever refuse a drink, run from a fight, or insult an attractive or compelling woman, Ikoma will abandon you.
You can detect the presence of spirits and spirit portals by making a PER Roll (TN 25, or higher for obscure or well-hidden spirits or portals). You get +1k1 to all Lore: Spirit Realms rolls.
Demands: If you ever willingly harm a non-corrupted member of the five ancient races (zokujin, kenku, troll, ningyo, and kitsu) or their descendants
You get +1k1 to all rolls to resist Temptation, Intimidation, and Fear.
Demands: If you ever knowingly betray your daimyo or the Lion clan, or your Honor drops below 5.0, Hitomi will abandon you.
You get +1k1 to all WIL Trait and Skill Rolls except those to avoid being provoked. You get +3k0 when using the Improvised Weapon emphasis of Jiujutsu, and +1k1 to damage with all improvised weapons.
Demands: If you ever back dwon from a physical competition or challenge, even a trivial one, Kaimetsu-Uo will abandon you.
You get +3k3 to any Stealth or Sleight-of-Hand Rolls to conceal a weapon on your person.
Demands: If you ever go unarmed into the presence of a rival or enemy, Gusai will abandon you.
You can substitute twice your Glory Rank for your Honor Rank when resisting Fear, Intimidation, or Temptation.
Demands: If you ever forsake a True Love or pass up an opportunity for Glory, Testuken will abandon you.
When making a Skill Roll with any Physical Trait, you can spend a Void Point to use STR instead.
Demands: If you ever lose a contest of Strength, Fureheshu will abandon you.
You suffer no ill effects from the Sun (dehydration, sunburn, etc.) and gain Reduction 5 against fire (normal or magical).
Demands: If you commit any act of impiety or blasphemy against the Fortunes or the Celestial Heavens, deliberately or not, Azami will abandon you.
You gain +1k1 to all Courtier or Etiquette rolls to defuse violence or find peaceful solutions to conflicts.
Demands: If you ever willingly choose violence when diplomacy is still an option, Kuyuden will abandon you.
You get +1k1 to resist Fear effects, or +2k2 if the Fear is caused by a Bloodspeaker.
Demands: If you ever flee from a battle with a Bloodspeaker when there is still a chance of victory, Reichin will abandon you.
You can speak with animals and animal shapeshifter spirits. You can always find food and water in the wilderness.
Demands: If you ever voluntarily or knowingly kill an animal or animal spirit, except in self-defense, Osusuki and Akomachi will abandon you.
You get +1k1 to any Social Skill roll to persuade others to follow your guidance or example. Once in your lifetime (GM's choice), a simple or random comment you make will be perceived as holding deep wisdom and meaning, with possibly lifelong consequences.
Demands: If you ever abandon followers who have come to your because of your words of wisdom, Suzume will abandon you.
You get +1k1 to any Skill Roll where you are performing a dishonorable act sanctioned by your duty to the Imperial house.
Demands: If you ever place your own Honor above the Empire's needs, Kasuga will abandon you.
Your Ally Advantages gain a free +1 to Devotion. You gain +1k0 to all Social Skill Rolls with your Allies. If an Ally ever betrays you, you gain the Driven: Destroy the Betrayer Disadvantage for no points.
Demands: If you ever betray or abandon a friend, Asako will abandon you.
You get +1k1 on all Spellcraft (Spell Research) rolls, and leran 1 additional spell each time you gain a Shugenja School Rank.
Demands: If you ever lose a magical or scholarly competition with someone who is not an Isawa, Isawa will abandon you.
You can make a Meditation/Void Skill Roll (TN 30, 2 hours) to regain 1 Spell Slot in each Ring.
Demands: If you become too involved in worldly matters (for instance, acquiring more than 3 Skill Ranks in Courtier or any Merchant or Low skill), Kaeteru will abandon you.
You get +1k1 to all INT-based Rolls, and add your INT to your Armor TN at all times. If you enter a skirmish alongside a member of the Isawa family, you gain +1 Void Point (lost if not used by the end of the skirmish).
Demands: If your Honor Rank ever drops below 4.0, or you ever willingly disobey a higer-ranking Isawa, or voluntarily leave a skirmish while an Isawa ally remains behind, Shiba will abandon you.
True Ronin only.
You can choose a number of individuals up to your Void as your "siblings." You have a Kharmic Tie with each, and will always be aware if any of them are in danger.
Demands: If you ever abandon, betray, or forsake any of your "siblings," Chihoru will abandon you.
Ronin Shugenja only.
You are considered to be one School Rank higher for the purposes of casting spells.
Demands: If you ever refuse to share magical knowledge with an honorable person, Miyuko will abandon you.
You get +1k0 to all Battle Skill Rolls. If you make a Bugei Skill Roll that fails, you can spend a Void Point for +1k1 to try to change the result, but lose the benefit of any Raises if you succeed.
Demands: If you ever turn down a chance to work for or train with a military force where you have not served before, Snu Tao will abandon you.
Your Raises for Craft: Swordsmithing are not limited in any way. (If using the Alernate Crafting rules, you instead get a Free Raise.)
Demands: If you ever use one of your own swords in combat, other than for self-defense, Tsi will abandon you.
If you are trained in a Bayushi School, you get +1k0 to all School Skills, and any time you spend a Void Point on a School Skill, you get +2k2 instead of +1k1. If you have a Kharmic Tie with another, you can both use each others' Void Points, but if one of you dies, teh other gains the Momoku Disadvantage for no points.
Demands: If you ever voluntarily abandon or knowingly betray the Scorpion Clan, or your Honor rises to 5.0 or better, Bayushi will abandon you.
Shosuro is not available in the current period; her soul is not in Yomi.
You get +3k1 to all Stealth, Acting, and Sincerity (Deceit) Skill Rolls.
Demands: If you ever betray the Scorpion Clan, disobey your superiors in the clan, or are corrupted by the Lying Darkness or the Shadow Dragon, Shosuro will abandon you.
You get +3k1 (instead of +1k1) whenever you spend a Void Point on a roll using PER or the Lore: Law skill.
Demands: If you evre knowingly break the law or allow another to break it in your presence, Saibankan will abandon you—unless you did so on the orders of your Scorpion superiors.
You get +1k1 to Spell Casting Rolls when casting any Wards spell. You automatically get the Bad Fortune: Yogo Curse Disadvantage for no points.
Demands: If you ever fall in love, Yogo will abandon you.
Shugenja only.
You do not have an Elemental Deficiency.
Demands: If you ever pass up a chance to learn more about magic, even blasphemous or dangerous magic, Iuchi will abandon you.
You get +2k2 to rolls to resist an attempt to physically restrain you (including Grappling attacks) or mentally influence you. Any spell that would restrain your physical movement has its TN increased by 5× your WIL.
Demands: If you ever knowingly and voluntarily allow yourself to be controlled by another who is not your rightful superior in the Unicorn clan, Moto will abandon you.
You get +1k1 to all Horsemanship Skill Rolls, and +1k0 to attack rolls against male opponents.
Demands: If you are ever deliberately cruel to a horse, or ever challenge a man (to a duel or a competition) and lose, Otaku will abandon you.
You get +1k1 to any Investigation rolls to understand something new, strange, or enigmatic, and to all AWA rolls using Etiquette or Sincerity (Honesty).
Demands: If you ever faily to show mercy and compassion to a rival or enemy, Shinjo will abandon you. (This does not extend to the Kolat or minions of the Lying Darkness or the Shadow Dragon.)
